"A Hoot"

From the two fellows just standing around while people filled the theatre to the final bow, A HOOT. Interaction with the audience and light hearted family fun. Just the ticket after a long day.

If you want to do something very nice for your Mother, Sister, friend (AND you) – get tickets to Quilters at the Yoder Barn in Newport News, VA. It is an absolutely captivating show – especially Act II. It is so well put together, it provokes every human emotion – your happy, your serious, your crying and don’t know why, and you'll fall in love with the female cast. The singing is professional and they are all believable cast members. This is clean basic theatre at it's best. Not a lot of props to distract you - simply great acting and a wonderful story. I can’t think of a better way to spend the money. You won’t be sorry and your Mother, Sister, or friend….well, they’ll be forever grateful for the memory. Collapse

He is a true superstar and seems to get better with age. His band was also excellent. Any how, what a great show. Collapse

This moving show, deceptively difficult to pull off, has been given a terrific production by Tidewater Rep at the Yoder Barn. Particularly to be praised is director Rebecca Taylor, who has put together a fine staging of this episodic piece in the quirky, intimate space, managing a through-line connecting the diverse stories, and never letting the material become too self-indulgent. Among the fine performers, Erin McGrann stands out with her wide range of characterizations ranging from gently moving to hilarious. Go see this show! Collapse

Last weekend I had the pleasure to attend a performance of Iron Street's Purlie and all I can say is Wow! The cast was amazing being lead by the powerful voices of Purlie, Luttibelle, Missy, and Gitlow. The costumes and makeup were great as well. I had never heard of this production company before, but now that I have I suggest to everyone to go see Purlie! From what I know it's going this weekend as well. Collapse

This was a powerful event. And they got it right from the military person's ability to use the F-word as a verb, a noun, an adverb and adjective (sometimes all in the same sentence) to the chasm that separates enlisted and officers. There was the poignant scene of how powerful letters from home become when you are far away and in harm's way. There was the delightful depiction of the "mid tour riot" when living with the stinky feet of your mates gets to be just a little much and you have the overwhelming need to hit something or somebody. Black Watch writers got the goofy and silly games that soldiers having been using to pass the time from the beginning of the world. They got the sounds of terror and the fear of the unknown and brought it to us. They got the sorrow of the fact that young men die for old men's greed. Fabulous. Shame on Norfolk for not filling the seats of every performance. Collapse
