at Barry Robinson Theatre and Fine Arts Center
July 23-August 1, 2010
Avg. Event Rating (4.7 Stars):
One of the longest running musicals in history, Les Misérables, is making its way to Virginia Beach, in a production more reminiscent of its Broadway debut than of a local production. For weeks, the Theatrix family has been building barricades, rehearsing with the live orchestra, creating and sewing period costumes, and staging this compelling and elaborate production, all performed by a cast of 45+ teens accompanied by a 25-piece live orchestra. Perfect entertainment for the whole...

Bye Bye Birdie
Barry Robinson Theatre and Fine Arts Center
Presented by Theatrix Productions, Inc.
at Barry Robinson Theatre and Fine Arts Center
March 6-March 15, 2009
Bye Bye Birdie is one of the most captivating musical shows of our time. It tells the story of a rock and roll singer who is about to be inducted into the army. The singer, Conrad Birdie, an Elvis Presley type, has a pompadour and thick sideburns; he wears gaudy gold costumes and speaks in a rugged voice. Albert Peterson, his agent, is a very pleasant mild mannered young man. Albert's faithful secretary Rose Alvarez keeps him and Birdie moving forward in the world. Rosie concocts one...

I am in awe of this production! Although the cast of this show ranges in age from 8 - 19, the level of talent and the amazing set and costumes are equal to or exceed many of the college level productions I have seen. In my opinion, Ian Cowcer's vocals and performance projects the strong, pure soul of Jean Valjean beautifully. This is my first time to see a Theatrix production as well as Les Miserables and I could not have been more impressed. I laughed, I cried, I loved it! The dedication and talent of these young artists should be supported and applauded.

This is the 2nd year I have seen Theatrix's production of 'Les Mis'. Considering the fact that these are ALL kids and, as the director informed us, they only had 20 rehearsals, they really do an extraordinary job. I noticed a few of the actors from last year's production & they have improved dramatically in a year's time. The most notably improved reprise from last year was Josh Swezey as The Bishop. For my money, Thenardier (Patrick Keith) stole the show. I caught his rendition of Marius, a polar opposite character, a few months back and he performed that character equally well. Jean Valjean (Ian Cowcer) has an absolutely tremendous voice. His vocal training has surely paid off as he is easily the 'best' singer I have heard perform the school edition. His acting, however, leaves a bit to be desired and I found myself not caring about Valjean by the end. If I am being completely honest, I preferred last year's rendition to this year's, but it's still VERY well worth seeing.

I saw it last year, and this year's Les Miz is even better. The background lighting added to the show. The orchestra is amazingly talented. The cast is super, as always. (I am not a parent, just a loyal fan of Theatrix Productions.) I recommend that you go see this now! It is dynamite.

I attended the show on Saturday Aug 1. The singing, costumes, live orchestra stage props("The barricade") and costumes were wonderful. I have seen this twice before and this was the best because I could hear the words being sung. If you can, GO SEE IT. I do not have a cast member in my family, but Theatrix does great work with these young people.

Do not miss this incredible production of Les Miz. The talent, the staging, the costumes, the acting - all are more
reminiscent of Broadway than a local performance. Brent Hartigan as Jean Valjean is flawless. His voice is strong and
beautiful and he truly pulls you into the show from his first note. Ian Cowcer is perfect as the relentless Javert. Also
of special note is David Ortiz as leader of the student revolutionaries, and Matt Johnson and Elizabeth Stanworth as
the comical Thenardiers. The rest of the cast is equally talented and delivers outstanding performances. The clever
staging is very effective and contributes to a seamless flow from scene to scene. I had to keep reminding myself that
these actors are teens! The sell-out crowd was enthusiastic and rewarded the cast with two standing ovations. Bravo
to the actors and the whole Theartrix company for an outstanding production. I am going back Sunday!

I had the pleasure of seeing Its "It's A Wonderful Life's" last performance. I really didn't expect much from the young cast, but they proved me wrong and changed my mind on "children's theatre." The young man who played George had a spectacular voice, and captured the essence of George Bailey. The young woman who played Mary was lovely, and seemed to have no trouble staying in character the entire show. All of the adults in the cast were full of energy and did a great job. All of the supporting characters (of the film at least - e.g. Ernie, Bert, violet, young George) made their characters their own and had fun. One of the biggest changes in the musical was the part of Clarence. Instead of the old bumbling angel we remember, we got to see a different side of Clarence. He was played by a young man. even though their was a large jump in age, I think the actor did a good job of keeping the essential characteristics of Clarence. overall, the show was superb.
