Kacey Sydnor Carneal is a folk artist who lives in Gloucester, a rural fishing and farming community in Virginia. She works only in oil on wood or canvas. Characteristic of Carneal's work is her distinctive use of the frame. In most of her paintings, the frame acts as a painted extension of the canvas; in others it serves as an accent.

Over 100 years ago, the largest funeral procession in America followed the death of a slave. Kim Russell will portray this pivotal figure in American history. Presented in the tradition of Chautauqua, the audience will listen to this voice from the past as well as ask Sojourner questions about her life and times as a slave, her work as a 19th century feminist, her courtroom battles and her speech.
