Contemporary Art Center of Virginia

The Contemporary Art Center of Virginia is a non-profit, non-collecting institution founded in 1952 to foster awareness, exploration and understanding of the significant art of our time. Regularly changing exhibitions feature painting, sculpture, photography, glass, video and other visual media from internationally acclaimed artists as well as artists of national and regional renown. By balancing its four primary activities - gallery exhibitions, studio art classes, educational outreach programs and outdoor art shows - the Contemporary Art Center of Virginia seeks to involve a diverse regional public in the rich and active language of contemporary visual art.

Richmond-based artist Sandra Luckett has transformed the Butler Gallery into an ornate, glittery exploration of water and femininity. She begins by culling ephemeral materials from everyday life that carry connotations of craft, like beads, glitter, transparency paper and fabric and creates sparkling environments of evoking wit and wonder.     09/24/09- 01/03/10	Camille Utterback Contemporary Art Center of Virginia Camille Utterback Presented by Contemporary Art Center of Virginia at Contemporary Art Center of Virginia September 24, 2009-January 3, 2010 Camille Utterback. Upon encountering Camille Utterback's art, museum visitors are pulled out of their normal role as viewer and become part of the art itself. Utterback has created algorithm-based computer paintings that are projected onto a wall and respond to the movements of the entire body. Letters fall like rain, busy people freeze in time and an abstract painting morphs and shifts all in response to the movements of the viewer.
    09/24/09- 01/03/10	Davmo and the Young Guns Contemporary Art Center of Virginia Davmo and the Young Guns Presented by Contemporary Art Center of Virginia at Contemporary Art Center of Virginia September 24, 2009-January 3, 2010 The Contemporary Art Center of Virginia is unearthing hidden gems with the opening of Davmo and the Young Guns. Davmo is a local firefighter/kneeboard surfer/father/husband/self-taught artist who has been making art locally for more than 20 years. In the past decade alone he has created more than 3000 works. His body of work is so prolific that it has inspired a new generation of young talent, the "Young Guns," who will exhibit alongside him this fall.

    08/08/09- 08/22/09	Hot Shop Contemporary Art Center of Virginia Hot Shop Presented by Contemporary Art Center of Virginia at Contemporary Art Center of Virginia August 8-August 22, 2009 The Off Center Glass traveling hot shop, a scaled-down version of a traditional glassblowing studio, demonstrates a wide variety of glassblowing techniques. The hot shop consists of a gas fired furnace, 12-inch glory hole and a small annealing oven. Visitors may watch live demonstrations, learn about glassblowing techniques and make requests to see specific objects created.
