Four dynamic American poets who have helped shape the literary landscape of the nation will highlight the ninth annual occasion of this Literary Festival The free, public festival launches with Kay Ryan, US Poet Laureate, as the keynote speaker on opening night

Ryan has written six books of poetry including Dragon Acts to Dragon Ends, Say Uncle and The Niagara River Her writing, often compared to that of Emily Dickinson because it illuminates the ordinary, has been selected four times for The Best American Poetry and has appeared in The New Yorker, The Yale Review and The American Scholar

Taylor Mali, one of the most well-known poets to have emerged from the poetry slam movement, studied drama in Oxford with members of The Royal Shakespeare Company and puts those presentation skills to work in his performances

Widely published Charles Wright received a Pulitzer Prize for Poetry in 1998 for Black Zodiac and a National Book Award in 1983 for Country Music: Selected Early Poems He is currently a chancellor of The Academy of American Poets and the Souder Family Professor of English at the University of Virginia

Nikki Giovanni, one of the most widely-read American poets insists on presenting the truth as she sees it, maintaining a prominent place as a strong voice of the African-American community Her autobiography, Gemini, was a finalist for the National Book Award; and Love Poems, Blues: For All the Changes and Quilting the Black-Eyed Pea were honored with NAACP Image Awards

Norfolk Harborfest began more than a quarter century ago when the Norwegian Tall Ship Christian Radich came to call on Norfolk, a waterfront community that had no city-owned property on which to dock a ship The ship was docked three blocks from Town Point at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and 13,000 people crossed her gangway in just one and a half days Over the next two years, City planners and leaders created berthing to accommodate more ships, and a waterfront public park was planned Norfolk Harborfest was born

Today, tall ships from all over the world frequently call on the City of Norfolk and nearly half a million visitors gather on the downtown waterfront each year for this annual celebration of our region's rich nautical heritage

The traditions of the East Coast's Premier Waterfront Festival are celebrated with nautical history, maritime events, visiting vessels, children's activities, local, regional and national entertainment
