Comprised of men hand-picked for the assignment, General of the Army Douglas MacArthur’s Honor Guard was one of the most important and visible parts of the General’s official family during the closing months of World War II and throughout the Occupation of Japan. The members of this elite unit were selected based on their military bearing, intelligence and physical stature. Every combat Division of the U.S. Army in the Pacific was represented in its ranks. They were the best of the best. They had to be – General MacArthur would accept no less than the best for the men entrusted to provide security not only for himself and his Headquarters but for his family as well. Only the Finest: General MacArthur’s Honor Guard examines a heretofore little-known unit that was such a large part of General MacArthur’s military family.

For thousands of people, spectacles bring the world into focus, yet few people understand how eyeglasses work and would be surprised by the variations in their use as they developed. Early spectacles from China were thought to improve one's sight in both a physical and spiritual sense. Western spectacles were designed to accommodate fashion, serve vanity, hide failing eyesight or simply to spy on others. Spectacular Spectacles is an exhibit featuring over 300 spectacles and vision aids from around the world. The exhibit, created by the Museum of Vision and toured by Smith Kramer Fine Art Services, offers the finest and most unusual pieces representative of changes in technology and craftsmanship.

This exhibition explores the use of quilting to decorate bed coverings, clothing, and accessories of the 17th and 18th centuries. See detailed drawings of elaborate quilting patterns that often are obscured by the technique's subtlety. Stomachers and petticoats worn with costly gowns, men's elaborate waistcoats, and counterpanes on the finest beds all are featured.

Stationary Voyages explores boats as objects of art, interpreted through contemporary photographs. Twenty photographers were given free reign to artistically interpret a variety of boats from The Mariners' Museum's collection. Each drew inspiration from the visual character of the boats and let their imaginations run wild. Their work represents a dazzling new perspective on the collection, while paying homage to the original builders of these boats, who were artists in their own right.

This special exhibition provides an extraordinary opportunity to see four rare and prized battle flags of the American Revolution. They have returned to America more than 225 years after being taken to British soil as trophies of war. The flags were captured by British cavalry officer Lieutenant Colonel Banastre Tarleton in two battles nearly a year apart. They remained in the Tarleton family's possession until their sale at auction in 2006. Three of the flags represent the 3rd Virginia Detachment led by Colonel Abraham Buford, and the fourth was captured in 1779 when Tarleton led his unit in a surprise attack on the Continental Army's 2nd Light Dragoons.

In the 1880s, Peter Henry Emerson began photographing landscapes in England, producing beautiful prints and publishing books and portfolios for which he became well known. He described himself as an anthropologist, capturing ways of life that were disappearing due to the impact of new industries and tourism. He composed his images in the camera and made final prints without studio props or faking compositions in the darkroom.

Changing Landscape: Paintings in Series by Jim Condron is an introduction to Condron's series of abstracted landscapes painted with unexpected color and powerful brushstrokes. Emboldening the landscape though his work on the canvas, he asserts his subject's existence through scale and form. Though termed by the artist as landscapes, Condron's focus is on the objects that inhabit the space- trees, rocks, and shadow- rather than the landscape itself.

Celebrate the 70th Anniversary of the Garden's creation by 220 local African Americans, by visiting Mutambo. This outdoor art exhibition features 50 large stone sculptures created by Zimbabwe artists. 'Mutambo' depicts art, beauty and the people of the African continent. Through their work, the artists believe 'spirits are being freed from the stone.' The sculptures will be shipped from the famous Shona Sculpture Park in Zimbabwe and will be placed throughout the Garden in carefully selected landscaped areas. Some may be viewed from the tram; others will be discovered as visitors walk through the Garden.

This fun, interactive exhibit allows visitors to get up close and personal with the world of insects. Developed by Dr. Richard Hoffman, the curator of the Virginia Museum of Natural History, and his staff.

This traveling exhibit explores the insect world through model insects in action, a child-friendly microscope, and interactive cabinets with bug specimens, including Virginia's state insect, the Tiger Swallowtail butterfly.

Take a fantastic journey into the homes of people around the world in this hands-on traveling exhibit. People live in all kinds of housing - large houses, portable houses, small houses, apartments, houseboats - the list is long. Visitors will learn how geography, climate, availability of materials, lifestyle, tradition and culture all influence the kind of house we live in. The environment in which a house is built can affect its design as illustrated in the 'My House' area. Here visitors step into three model homes: A Mongolian herder's ger, an m'bure from the tropics of Fiji and a stilt house from a Malaysian fishing village. Children use a tabletop model of a Mongolian ger that can be disassembled and packed up as they figure out how to pack the ger on the backs of two camels. They can also rebuild the ger after it has been unpacked. Fun activities in the house settings help children make connections between what happens in their own homes and what happens in these houses. Most of the activities are linked to the notion of environment.

In partnership with the Dolphin Scholarship Foundation of Virginia Beach, Nauticus will open a new exhibit, 1958 - 2008: Fifty Years Exploring Innerspace, in its Changing Gallery. The exhibit commemorates the historic 50th anniversary of the first successful voyage of the USS Nautilus to the North Pole.
USS Nautilus was the first commissioned nuclear-powered ship in the United States Navy as well as the first to cross the North Pole. The exhibit will feature images from subsequent voyages, a 'virtual race' back to the North Pole as it is reenacted this summer, as well as the 20-minute historic documentary film, Operation Sunshine.
The dream of traveling undersea through innerspace to reach the Arctic Ocean and explore the North Pole was centuries old when the first nuclear submarine left Pearl Harbor on a top-secret Cold War mission on July 23, 1958. In the race between the Americans and Soviets to see who could be the first to reach the geographic 'top of the world,' the USS Nautilus proved triumphant, crossing the North Pole on August 3, 1958. The success of the mission proved the viability of nuclear-powered ships and shortened the undersea journey from the Pacific Ocean to the North Atlantic by several thousand miles.
“This new exhibit provides the local community with a unique opportunity to review history and think about the challenges presented by increased global warming. The Dolphin Scholarship Foundation is proud to partner with Nauticus,' said Foundation Secretary/Treasurer Merrill H. Dorman, Captain USN (Ret).

These 12 photographs, drawn from the Chrysler's collection, were taken by award-winning photographer Ben Fernandez just one year before the untimely death of Civil Rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Fernandez captured several powerful moments of King's life on camera. These compelling images invite visitors to walk through the streets with Fernandez as he witnessed history in the making and the rare opportunity to view the home of Dr. King and his family. Fernandez documented, with great visual strength, the impact of the slain leader and the movement he created on the United States of America both then and now. These photos were initially produced by Kodak as 50 Limited Edition, numbered portfolios-donated to prestigious museums, including the Chrysler.
