Norfolk's Mid-Autumn Moon Festival commemorates one of the most celebrated of Chinese holidays, and is rich in Asian culture and tradition. Normally celebrated on the fifteenth day of the eighth lunar month in observance of the bountiful autumn harvest, the event can also be held at various times during the autumn season. Members of the local Chinese community compare the Mid-Autumn Festival to the American Thanksgiving where families and friends come together to celebrate the bountiful harvest with a plentiful feast.

More than 50 creative and interactive activities, storytelling stages, hands-on workshops and educational displays, cultural experiences, arts and crafts and more, this is one of Hampton Roads' most beloved family festivals. Festivities begin with the Grand Illumination of the Downtown Norfolk and Olde Towne Portsmouth skylines, when 100,000 voices along the Grand Illumination Parade Route will take part in a community countdown. The skylines stretch nearly 20 miles to light up our favorite holidays - Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, Christmas, Kwanzaa and New Year's Eve. The illumination signals the start of the parade filled with festive and lighted floats, marching bands, giant balloons, decorated vehicles, dancers, and, of course, Santa Claus. An Occasion for the Arts has been held the first Sunday in October for 40 years in beautiful Williamsburg, Virginia. This extraordinary event, held on blocked-off city streets, features 150 -160 painters, print makers, sculptors, jewelers, photographers, and artisans of fine crafts.
