The 26th Annual Hampton Bay Days presents an afternoon with Bruce Hornsby and Ricky Skaggs! Hornsby, a twelve-time Grammy nominee and three-time Grammy winner, has produced ten albums, and sold over 11 million copies worldwide. Music lovers will enjoy an eclectic mix of hits played by Hornsby and the Noisemakers including, 'The Way It Is', the most played song on American radio in 1987, 'The End of the Innocence', 'Jacob's Ladder' and 'Gonna Be Some Changes Made'.
Also, known around the music industry as a collaborator, Hornsby has been sought after by a veritable 'who's who' in the music business. He's played on albums with notables Bob Dylan, Don Henley, the Grateful Dead, Bob Seger, Crosby Stills and Nash, Stevie Nicks, Willie Nelson, and more. In 2007, bluegrass veteran Ricky Skaggs and pianist Bruce Hornsby joined forces for a collaborative album released on March 20, 2007. Eleven-time Grammy Award winner Ricky Skaggs is affectionately known as one of bluegrass music€™s most recognized ambassadors.

Backed by Skaggs' ace band Kentucky Thunder, the Ricky Skaggs and Bruce Hornsby with Kentucky Thunder performance includes soulful songs drawn from deep roots in mountain music - adding piano, and Hornsby's inimitable songwriting to the core of the bluegrass lineup - mandolin, guitar, bass, fiddle and banjo. Surprisingly, two of the most familiar songs prove to be at once the most startlingly innovative: 'Mandolin Rain' is reinvented as an acoustic ballad and 'Super Freak' (yes, the Rick James song) jumps out as a tongue in cheek hillbilly rave-up. Other songs include: 'The Dreaded Spoon', 'Across the Rocky Mountain' and 'Gulf of Mexico Fishing Boat Blues'.

When asked to comment on the collaboration, Skaggs raved, 'It's one of the most memorable projects I've ever done,' and Hornsby agreed: 'Ricky Skaggs is a deep musical soul, one of the great keepers of the traditional and mountain music flame.'

Event Location: This event will take place in Downtown Hampton on the City Hall stage.

This special exhibition provides an extraordinary opportunity to see four rare and prized battle flags of the American Revolution. They have returned to America more than 225 years after being taken to British soil as trophies of war. The flags were captured by British cavalry officer Lieutenant Colonel Banastre Tarleton in two battles nearly a year apart. They remained in the Tarleton family's possession until their sale at auction in 2006. Three of the flags represent the 3rd Virginia Detachment led by Colonel Abraham Buford, and the fourth was captured in 1779 when Tarleton led his unit in a surprise attack on the Continental Army's 2nd Light Dragoons.

The City Council of Portsmouth affirmed its commitment to understanding cultural diversity. It was most appropriate the City of Portsmouth selected the Kiswahili word UMOJA as the name of its African-American Festival. Umoja, a Kiswahili word meaning unity, is the first principal of Kwanzaa, an African-American cultural holiday celebrated from December 26th through January 1st. This principal emulates unity in the family, community and nation.

For more than 20 years, Hope House has been the vision behind the Stockley Gardens Arts Festival. And now, the twice-yearly event is a community tradition. Each year, more than 25,000 people flock to Stockley Gardens in Norfolk's historic Ghent neighborhood to browse through jewelry, pottery, paintings, and other works of art. The park is full of strollers and dogs and tantalizing smells. Music wafts from the stage. Friends stop to chat. And throughout the weekend, there is a feeling of hope.

Blue Skies Gallery is pleased to feature the art works of Veronica Gray for the month of August. Veronica was born in France and immigrated as a child to the U.S. with her family. Today, as an immigrant as well as a military spouse, Veronica's life is cross cultural. She attributes her ability to feel comfortable with abstract concepts to her exposure to new and different cultures around the world.

Mixed-media paintings dealing with abstract concepts either up in the sky or under the water. Veronica's work reflects other worlds and other ways of looking at things.

The 7th Annual PANorama Caribbean Music Fest celebrates the music and culture of the Caribbean. And if it's Caribbean, it's probably rooted in the steel band! And if it's Caribbean, it has to take place outside! So, what better place than the beautiful Virginia Beach oceanfront? On Friday the action takes place at the Virginia Beach Convention Center with workshops for participating bands. The afternoon concludes with a mass steel band performance. Friday evening s activities move to the Seaside Palladium at 24th Street for headliner performances. Saturday features the steel drum competition, where bands ranging from elementary to college to community groups from all around the country compete for ratings and awards. Sunday is jam packed with a wide variety of Caribbean music. Come on down for this authentic beach party. Enjoy Steel Band, Soca, Reggae and More! It s the perfect way to end the festival, as talented steel pan performers strut their stuff for the crowd!

Take a local vacation when It's Just Beachy opens at the Smithfield Cultural Arts Center with artwork all about relaxing near the ocean and at the beach.
