What happens when Dr. Arthur Roman’s research of a deadly disease is interrupted by his mid-west sweetheart’s culinary ambitions? Pandemonium breaks loose in Papua New Guinea. War is proclaimed, a cooking school begun, a new Goddess is discovered and a Nobel Prize hangs in the balance. This regional premiere is a goofy spoof–just like Gary Larson’s The Far Side come to life.

Frank and Sadie are perfectly in love. He’s just retired as a professor of Shakespeare and she is entertaining dreams of finally kissing him in Paris under the full moon of Montmarte. Plane tickets are bought, the hotel is booked and then… This Virginia Premiere by Richmond playwright Billy Doswell is a powerful, bittersweet romantic tragedy about trust, betrayal and the challenges of Alzheimer’s.

Set in New York City and Charlottesville, Virginia in the early 1900’s, The Gift of the Magi is a holiday treat for the entire family. Jim and Della are poor and desperate. The rent is coming due and Christmas is on its way. It’s up to a watch and a set of combs to make a miracle and remind them that love is what makes the world go round. Back by popular demand, this first-ever, full-length adaptation of O. Henry’s classic American tale of love and giving is a delight for holiday audiences from ages one to ninety-nine.

It is the night before President Nixon is to announce his resignation, and he has summoned Henry Kissinger. Nixon is willing to concoct any twisted plot to stay in office. Kissinger wants him to go. As the two of them discuss options, they revisit the climatic events of their administration and impersonate a dazzling array of characters from Breshnev and Mao to Kennedy. This timely political satire features outrageous comedy and a frightening look at the inside of Presidential politics.

Simon Mostyn has recently married Kay Ridgeway, a rich woman, having thrown over his former lover, Jacqueline. The couple is on their honeymoon and is at present on a paddle steamer on the Nile. With them are Canon Pennefather, Kay's guardian, and Jacqueline, who has been dogging their footsteps all through the honeymoon. Also on the boat are a rich, ill tempered old woman with her niece and companion, a rather direct young man, a German who nurses a grudge against Kay's father, and Kay's maid. During the voyage Jacqueline works herself into a state of hysteria and shoots at Simon, wounding him in the knee. A few moments later Kay is found shot in her bunk. By the time the boat reaches its destination, Canon Pennefather has laid bare an audacious conspiracy and has made sure the criminals shall not go free.

The crass, egotistic junkman Harry Brock has come to a swanky hotel in Washington to make crooked deals with government big-wigs. He has brought with him the charming but dumb ex-chorus girl Billie, whose lack of social graces embarrasses even Harry. Billie must be taught some of the amenities, and a few basic bits of information. The young, idealistic magazine reporter Paul Verrall, who has been investigating political skullduggery and is interested in Brock's activities, agrees for a salary, to educate Billie. He finds Billie has a natural honesty and a frank streak in her, and she begins to learn about history, politics, and what Harry really is and what he wants. At a dramatic moment she rebels against being merely a tool in Harry's crooked schemes and refuses to sign the documents which she has come to learn are part of an ambitious effort to defraud the public. This precipitates a crisis, as Billie readies to leave Harry for a life of her own.

This is the love story of Ethel and Norman Thayer, who are returning to their summer home on Golden Pond for the forty-eighth year. He is a retired professor, nearing eighty, with heart palpitations and a failing memory-but still is as tart-tongued, observant and eager for life as ever. Ethel, ten years younger, and the perfect foil for Norman, delights in all the small things that have enriched and continue to enrich their long life together. They are visited by their divorced, middle-aged daughter and her dentist fiancé, who then go off to Europe, leaving his teenage son behind for the summer. The boy quickly becomes the 'grandchild' the elderly couple have longed for, and as Norman revels in taking his ward fishing and thrusting good books at him, he also learns some lessons about modern teenage awareness-and slang-in return.

The time of the action is 'an average day in the life of Charlie Brown.' It really is just that, a day made up of little moments picked from all the days of Charlie Brown, from Valentine's Day to the baseball season, from wild optimism to utter despair, all mixed in with the lives of his friends (both human and non-human) and strung together on the string of a single day, from bright uncertain morning to hopeful starlit evening.

These 2600 year old tales have never been as entertaining as this! Join two traveling Elizabethan actors as they stumble upon an assembled crowd and decide to put on a showcase of Aesop's most famous fables. The result is a fast-paced, high-energy production where the actors hilariously bring to life the Tortoise and the Hare, The Fox and the Grapes, The Lion and the Mouse, The Monkey and the Pail, and Boy who Cried Wolf! These stories are education-packed gems that focus on honesty, compassion, kindness and hard work.

For Vincent Didonato, the family's metal casting shop that he runs would hardly seem the perfect place to meet Ms. Right. But that is exactly what happens when a bunch of resumes from several comely New York actresses start pouring into his 'Casting' office. Finding one young waitress too irresistible to let slip away; he sets up an 'audition' for a fictitious film. Mistaken identity and hilarity soon follow as show business and sheet metal collide. A mad-cap new comedy that proves sometimes it's alright to let sparks fly.

A dilapidated Connecticut farm-house provides the backdrop for family intrigue in one of Eugene O'Neill's best plays. Old Phil Hogan and his fiery daughter fear eviction from their landlord and devise a scheme to keep their home. But as emotions run deep, plans begin to unravel. All that remains are two 'misbegotten' people, under the moonlight, facing their own loneliness. A Moon for the Misbegotten is one of the great American classics and can't be missed.

One of the most significant battles to be fought on American soil happened here in Hampton Roads just fifty years ago. When Norfolk citizens struggled to reopen public schools that had been shut in defiance to racial integration, Virginia's infamous policy of Massive Resistance made national headlines. To the eyes of many today, their community is still recovering from that fight. VSC Artistic Director Chris Hanna will weave excerpts from original media coverage, court documents, and recorded personal accounts with imagined scenes and characters he creates to examine the legacy Massive Resistance provides the region today.

She was the First Lady of Jazz known the world over, but yet she hailed right in Tidewater. The powerful voice and rich life of Ella Fitzgerald are told in an exhilarating new musical that re-imagines her 1967 landmark concert in Nice, France. At times heartbreaking - but always uplifting - Ella features 14 of her greatest hits - including 'That Old Black Magic,' and 'A-Tisket, A-Tasket' - all performed by her onstage band and that unforgettable voice.

Virginia Opera's 2008-2009 Season opens with a new production of Il Trovatore, featuring thunderous confrontations, powerful music and soaring voices as the Count di Luna brings his forces to bear against those of the troubadour Manrico; both men fiercely determined to capture the love of beautiful Leonora. But amidst the ringing clash of steel lies a shattering truth: they are brothers, separated at birth by a gypsy obsessed with vengeance.

Verdi's sweeping tale is an action-packed romantic tragedy reeling with valiant patriotism and drama. Join our band of gypsies whose hammers will rise up and pound in time with the famous Anvil Chorus, praising hard work, wine and women.

Toast the holidays with this hilarious concoction and delightful romp through the Italian countryside! Donizetti's intoxicating romantic comedy follows the efforts of the hapless farmer boy Nemorino to win the object of his desires, Adina, the prettiest belle in town. His heart aching with love unrequited, and desperate for an advantage over her current debonair suitor, Sergeant Belcore, the young farmer buys a powerful love potion from the traveling cure-all 'Doctor' Dulcamara. His luck begins to change instantly. If only he knew that his newfound success in romance has more to do with Adina's true feelings than the 'magic' Elixir's sole ingredient: cheap wine!

This supremely melodic masterpiece is a tautly suspenseful thriller set in Rome during the Napoleonic wars. Floria Tosca, a headstrong and celebrated operatic soprano, loves the handsome painter Mario Cavaradossi, whose political activism places him in the crosshairs of the evil Baron Scarpia. As the Chief of Police, Scarpia uses his power to set in motion a plan that will force Tosca to satisfy his carnal desires, and rid him of Cavaradossi once and for all. Betrayal, vengeance, seduction and murder, all marinated in Puccini's most compelling score - come face the heat of Tosca's kiss!

If you enjoyed Virginia Opera's recent operatic comedies, The Marriage of Figaro and Pirates of Penzance, you will fall in love with The Barber of Seville. Rossini's spicy masterpiece is a nonstop comedy express. Its spirited music bounces us happily along with the outrageous mayhem dispensed by a singing barber, whose meddling ways may yet help the handsome young Count Almaviva to marry the beautiful Rosina. Her guardian, Dr. Bartolo, has other plans, however! To what extremes will these men take their cat and mouse games for one woman's love? Join them, and you will see that to escape without razor burn, it will take a close shave from the barber we all know as 'Figaro! Figaro! FIGARO!'

Jessie asks for her father's service revolver and calmly announces that she intends to kill herself. At first her mother refuses to take her seriously, but as Jessie sets about tidying the house and making lists of things to be looked after, her sense of desperate helplessness begins to build. In the end, we are dealt a stunning and deeply disturbing moment - a moment never to be forgotten by those who have witnessed, and come to understand, her plight. Winner of the Pulitzer Prize and the Susan Smith Blackburn Prize.

A late middle aged zoo attendant still has lingering visions of being a songwriter, and these hopes are buoyed by his mistress who lives downstairs. On the day the Pope is making his first visit to New York, the mistress talks him into calling his old school chum, now a big Hollywood producer, for a job writing music for films. At the same time his son comes home AWOL from Fort Dix carrying a bomb with which he intends to blow up the Pope. In the meantime the jiffy wagon is to come and take away his cuckoo wife (Bananas). At about the same time three sightseeing nuns drop in from the roof while trying to get a glimpse of the Pope. The House of Blue Leaves was Winner of the 1971 Critics Award and the Obie Award as Best American Play.

This fun fairy tale begins with the annual stockholders' meeting and election of officers of a colossal manufacturing empire called General Products. The election is going smoothly and the meeting is about over when a timid old lady who owns 10 shares…asks if she can ask a question. She has read every page of the annual report and she wants to know why the chairman of the board is being paid $170,000 a year. The corrupt new officers try every tactic they can think of to quiet the little old lady, including giving her a job, but through all of it she perseveres in trying to hold the company accountable for its actions.

This is the Tony Award-winning epic saga of three people forced to make choices that will change their lives and alter the course of history forever. AIDA is infused with an exhilarating score by pop megastar Sir Elton John, Grammy and Tony Award-winning composer of The Lion King and Billy Elliott. AIDA is a complex love story in which compassion, forgiveness and understanding triumph over bigotry and hatred. Contemporary Broadway at its best!

This classic musical, with an award-winning score by Leonard Bernstein and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, recently celebrated its 50th anniversary. The timeless tale of rivalry and star-crossed lovers remains as timeless today as it did when it first burst on the New York stage in 1957. Songs like 'Tonight,' 'There's a Place for Us,' 'Somewhere' and 'Maria' have become part of the popular American songbook.

Broadway's big, fat hit! Irrepressible entertainment about a larger-than-life teenage girl, with big hair and even bigger heart who transforms herself into a teen celebrity. A happy, fun-filled look back at 1962, Hairspray is colorful, energetic and filled with toe-tapping music that will have you dancing in the aisles!

The new Virginia Beach Convention Center's video art wall is the first of its size in the country with four walls totaling 360 feet in length. The walls showcase video installations by contemporary video artists, Tricia McLaughlin of New York and Robert Drummond of Los Angeles, who were selected from a national pool of artists. Drummond's high definition video, Where Land Meets Water, is comprised of textural montages of nature and industry from around Virginia Beach. McLaughlin's animated work, Aquatecture, depicts 3-D animated characters, Hefty Man and Slender Woman, who function as everyman and everywoman and are shown going about their daily lives in a virtual aquarium.

The Capitol Steps began as a group of Senate staffers who set out to satirize the very people and places that employed them. In the years that followed, many of the Steps ignored the conventional wisdom ('Don't quit your day job!'), and although not all of the current members of the Steps are former Capitol Hill staffers, taken together the performers have worked in a total of eighteen Congressional offices and represent 62 years of collective House and Senate staff experience.

This is a hit musical comedy starring two-time Emmy Award winner, Sally Struthers. This zany evening begins as the Little Sisters of Hoboken discover that their cook, Sister Julia, Child of God, has accidentally poisoned 52 fellow sisters. Money must be raised immediately for burials! The sisters decide that the best way to raise the money is to put on a variety show. Here we meet Reverend Mother Regina, a former circus performer; Sister Mary Hubert, the Mistress of Novices; a streetwise nun named Sister Robert Anne, Sister Mary Leo, a novice who is a wannabe ballerina and the delightfully wacky Sister Mary Amnesia, the nun who lost her memory when a crucifix fell on her head. Featuring star turns, tap and ballet dancing, an audience quiz, and comic surprises, this show has become an international phenomenon boasting more than 5000 productions worldwide in over 21 different languages.

The man who created the catchphrases 'Git-R-Done' and 'Lord, I Apologize' is coming to Norfolk. Dan Whitney, known better as Larry the Cable Guy, has proven to be one of the nations most successful comics.

His one-liner filled act soon caught word-of-mouth fire in the South and brought him to the attention of television. Appearances on Evening at The Improv and Comic Strip Live increased his fan base past rural America, but it was on the nationally syndicated Bob and Tom Show on radio that Larry got the most exposure. His success with radio continued when he became a regular on Jeff Foxworthy's Country Countdown Show.

This 'party' of a show is a funny, warm, and spontaneous trip through Ms. Lavin's distinguished life and career, including songs from her Broadway musical roles as well as standards and material by such varied composers as Antonio Carlos Jobim and Steely Dan. Featured with her in the show is famous New York cabaret singer and pianist Billy Stritch, who has performed alongside Liza Minnelli in her concerts and television specials and in the most recent Broadway revival of 42nd Street. Backed by a jazz trio, the performers bring something for everyone - including a surprising instrumental performance at one point by Ms. Lavin.

Liz Smith of the New York Post exclaims about the show 'You'll be sorry if you miss Lavin's bravura Diva performance. She is spectacular!'

There will be mock trials and costumed re-enactors. Come see what early American justice was like, you'll be glad you're living in the 'New World'! The Virginia Patriots, Inc. will be performing actual court cases taken from the colonial records.

This is an annual event and a fun day for the whole family, especially school children studying early American history. Besides experiencing 18th-century justice, you can join the jury or have your picture taken in the stocks.

Set in New York City and Charlottesville, Virginia in the early 1900's, The Gift of the Magi is a holiday treat for the entire family. Jim and Della are poor and desperate. The rent is coming due and Christmas is on its way. It's up to a watch and a set of combs to make a miracle and remind them that love is what makes the world go round. Back by popular demand, this first-ever, full-length adaptation of O. Henry's classic American tale of love and giving is a delight for holiday audiences from ages one to ninety-nine.

Winner of the 2005 Tony Award for Best Musical, Monty Python's Spamalot is the outrageous new musical comedy lovingly ripped off from the film classic Monty Python and The Holy Grail. Directed by Tony Award-winner Mike Nichols, with a book by Eric Idle and music and lyrics by the Grammy Award-winning team of Mr. Idle and John Du Prez, Spamalot tells the tale of King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table as they embark on their quest for the Holy Grail. Flying cows, killer rabbits, taunting Frenchmen and show-stopping musical numbers are just a few of the reasons audiences everywhere are eating up Spamalot.

When Elmo's sunflower, Sunny, outgrows his flower pot, Big Bird's garden seems to be the perfect place for Sunny to flourish. An excited Abby Cadabby, Sesame Street's fairy-in-training, casts a spell to make Sunny grow faster. The spell does just the opposite and, instead of growing, Elmo and his friends shrink! As Abby tries to reverse the spell, Elmo, Zoe, Telly and friends explore Big Bird's garden from a smaller perspective and learn some big lessons about patience, overcoming fears and appreciation of nature. From dancing ladybugs to grouchy beetles, get ready for a fresh, original Sesame Street Live on a whole new scale!

Singer Carrie Underwood won the TV talent show American Idol in 2005. A senior in college when she entered the contest, Underwood performed mostly country songs, a departure from previous years' winners Kelly Clarkson (2002) and Ruben Studdard (2003) and Fantasia Barrino (2004). Underwood grew up singing at events and at church, in and around her hometown of Checotah, Oklahoma. She was one of 100,000 potential contestants when the 2005 season began, and she ended up in a tight race against Bo Bice, a southern rocker from Alabama. Judge Simon Cowell predicted Underwood's ultimate victory two months in advance, but in the final weeks Bice emerged as a favorite. In the final show of the season, on 25 May 2005, Underwood narrowly beat out Bice to become the new 'American Idol,' guaranteeing her a recording contract. Her debut album, Some Hearts, was released in November of 2005 and became a country-pop hit that won two Grammys. It included the hits 'Jesus Take the Wheel,' 'Inside Your Heaven' and 'Before He Cheats.' Her 2007 album, Carnival Ride, debuted at the top of the country and Billboard charts and included the hit 'So Small.'

A company of actors reenact macabre events. A young violin prodigy skyrockets to international prominence, only to meet a supernatural fate. A neurotic real-estate agent shows a house filled with unspeakable secrets to a buyer harboring a thirst for tabloid atrocities. A woman is unwound when her baby begins to speak early - still inside her womb. Actors even portray actual audience members in a strange point-of-view twist.

Maria de Buenos Aires is a tango opera by Astor Piazzolla. The music for this piece draws on the nuevo tango idiom for which Piazzolla is famous. While not in the narrow sense of an opera ballet, because the dance is tango rather than classical ballet, it falls within the tradition of having set dance pieces integral to an operatic work.
