This exhibition explores the fascination with honoring deceased loved ones and heroes. Paintings, medals and quilts were created to honor the country's first president and national hero George Washington after his death in 1799. Schoolgirls in the beginning decades of the nineteenth century created needlework pictures that memorialized a loved one. Jewelry was created specifically for those in mourning.
