In partnership with the Dolphin Scholarship Foundation of Virginia Beach, Nauticus will open a new exhibit, 1958 - 2008: Fifty Years Exploring Innerspace, in its Changing Gallery. The exhibit commemorates the historic 50th anniversary of the first successful voyage of the USS Nautilus to the North Pole. USS Nautilus was the first commissioned nuclear-powered ship in the United States Navy as well as the first to cross the North Pole. The exhibit will feature images from subsequent voyages, a 'virtual race' back to the North Pole as it is reenacted this summer, as well as the 20-minute historic documentary film, Operation Sunshine. The dream of traveling undersea through innerspace to reach the Arctic Ocean and explore the North Pole was centuries old when the first nuclear submarine left Pearl Harbor on a top-secret Cold War mission on July 23, 1958. In the race between the Americans and Soviets to see who could be the first to reach the geographic 'top of the world,' the USS Nautilus proved triumphant, crossing the North Pole on August 3, 1958. The success of the mission proved the viability of nuclear-powered ships and shortened the undersea journey from the Pacific Ocean to the North Atlantic by several thousand miles. 'This new exhibit provides the local community with a unique opportunity to review history and think about the challenges presented by increased global warming. The Dolphin Scholarship Foundation is proud to partner with Nauticus,' said Foundation Secretary/Treasurer Merrill H. Dorman, Captain USN (Ret).
