The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation's American Indian Lecture Series welcomes Dr. Stephanie Pratt, a member of the Crow Creek Dakota Sioux and currently a resident of the United Kingdom, where she is a reader in art history at the University of Plymouth. She was recently a co curator for the 2007 exhibition Between Worlds: Voyagers to Britain, 1700-1860 held at the National Portrait Gallery in London and is the author of American Indians in British Art 1700-1840. Dr. Pratt's recent research has focused on distinguished/remarkable visitors to London from the 17th to 19th centuries who came from Africa, North America, the Pacific, and the Indian subcontinent to the center of Britain's growing empire. This evening lecture will explore visual portrayals of the American Indian in regard to the construction of the 18th and 19th-century British Empire and the relationships that empire held with the native peoples of her colonies.
